Ready Brake Test Results:
The ReadyBrake has consistently proven to reduce the stopping distance of a given motor home by upwards of 30% when towing. Many of our competitors show test results with the GVWR (gross vehicle weight rating) of each vehicle, make, model, and year depicted as well as weather conditions, road conditions, etc. This would be fantastic if everyone drove the same motor home, towed the same car, and carried the exact same supplies in the same weather, road, and terrain conditions that were tested.
The ReadyBrake did require testing to prove that brake drag does not occur while descending a hill. Mr. John Franklin of Iola, KS was kind enough to do this testing for us. At the time of testing he owned a 1982 Newall five speed diesel pusher, 39' in length and towed a 1997 Ford Explorer. Mr. Franklin installed a DL-100 brake monitor in the dash of his motor home so he could see when the brake pedal in his Explorer was activating.
While descending a 7% grade hill outside of Phoenix, AZ Mr. Franklin down shifted his motor home and applied the jake brake to maintain a speed of 40 miles per hour. The DL-100 monitor light illuminated briefly immediately after applying the jake brake and then didn't light at all until braking was applied to the motor home. The ReadyBrake did not drag the Explorers brakes downhill or the DL-100 monitor light would have stayed on.
NSA RV Products is very confident that brake drag will not occur when using our product, however the product must be installed correctly and proper steep grade procedures should still be followed. The ReadyBrake does not replace good driving habits or careful driving procedures. You should still use good judgment on steep grades taking into consideration the weight of your towed vehicle and the amount of down shifting or use of supplementary braking such as exhaust brakes, or jake brakes which will be required.
We do not recommend backing up your motor home with a vehicle in tow. The ReadyBrake must be disabled prior to backing up if it is absolutely necessary. Brake drag will occur if you back up using the ReadyBrake because once it activates the brake your towed vehicle will not move backwards anymore as the brake is held down resulting in a crumpled tow bar or worse.
